Charlaine Harris was born on November 25th 1951 in Tunica, Mississippi. She holds the accolade of being a New York Times bestseller and has been writing now for longer than 20 years. She currently lives with her husband and three children in Magnolia, south Arkansas. Her early literary career was spent writing about ghosts in poetry, after which she wrote about teenage problems and plays. Her greatest success has come from her book writing however.
She wrote the Aurora Teagarden series beginning with “Real Murders” in 1990 and her last novel of this series was “Poppy Done To Death” in 2003. In all there have been eight books in the Aurora Teagarden series.
From 1996 she began to write the series called Shakespeare or Lily Bard as many prefer to name it. This began with “Shakespeare’s Landlord” in 1996 and ended with “Shakespeare’s Counselor” in 2001. In all there were five books in this series, and Charlaine Harris has said there will definitely be no more.
She then began writing what is now by far her best known and loved series – The Southern Vampire Series – or Sookie Stackhouse Series as its also known. This began in 2001 with “Dead Until Dark” and is still ongoing with the most recent novel being “A Touch of Dead” which was out on the book shelves in October of 2009. This last one is a compilation of all the Sookie-universe short stories. This set of novels is based upon a telepathic barmaid called Sookie Stackhouse who lives in a small town called Bon Temps in Louisiana. The first book of this series – “Dead Until Dark”, won the Anthony Award for the Best Paperback Mystery in 2001. The Sookie Stackhouse series has been released in many different countries, including the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and France.
The creator of the hit HBO television series Six Feet Under – Alan Ball – decided to create a further television series based on Sookie Stackhouse and the Southern Vampire Mysteries. The first series – True Blood – premiered in September of 2008, while the second series began in June 2009.
In October of 2001 Charlaine Harris also began writing a further series of books named the Harper Connelly Series, which are writing about a young woman who uses her clairvoyant abilities to find dead people. The last of the current series of four books was released in 2009.
